Wood is very old consumer and building material that surrounds us everywhere. Wood training was started in Võru Industrial School already in 1925. During these years, the students have been taught the following specialities related to wood: furniture maker, joiner’s and furniture work, machinery and device operating in timber industry enterprises, and the wood processing technology.
In 2001 a new wood processing technology study programme was introduced for professional higher education level with the study period of 3.5 years. In relation to the changes in the structure of the school, the Chair of Wood Technology was also established in the same year.
The Chair of Wood Technology prepares specialists in one of the largest areas of manufacturing industry, which is timber and furniture production. For contemporary production process this area needs specialists who are able to adapt well and have thorough knowledge of their speciality – this is exactly the kind of training the Võru County Vocational Training Centre offers at the Chair of Wood Processing. The technical furnishings of the timber workshop, study classes and laboratories are constantly updated.
For successfully competing at the open labour market, the chair has undertaken the task of being informed of the current processes in timber and furniture enterprises. For that reason we organise training visits to the enterprises that have put new technologies into use, and the enterprises that are selected for the apprenticeship definitely have good technological furnishings and organisation of work. With independent work assignments the students are guided to lifelong learning to encourage the development of initiative and give an opportunity to obtain the necessary general competences.
In the Chair of Wood Technology the students are preparing the furnishings of the school’s studies in the timber workshop in the process of apprenticeship, which comprises about one-third of the study period. The apprenticeship is conducted both in the school’s modern timber workshop as well as in different enterprises. Excellent students also have the opportunity to perform their apprenticeship partly or entirely in foreign countries.
