The Chair of Metal Processing and Mechatronics is operating in the Võru County Vocational Training Centre since its establishment in 2001. The teaching of the speciality takes place in two fields of the profession: metal processing and mechatronics according to the study programmes for secondary school graduates and professional higher education. Both specialities are universal.
In the last five years, the importance of industry has considerably grown in Estonia, especially the amount of the companies manufacturing machines, appliances, and other metal products. All these enterprises need professionally trained specialists. The speciality of metal processing is one of the specialities with the longest traditions in our school. The recent inquires conducted among the graduates show that the average wage numbers and the proportion of people working on the studied speciality are one of the best from the average indicators of the graduates.
In 2003, we also started to teach mechatronics. The given speciality was developed in relation to the changed needs at the labour market and increased demand for specialists who know the electricity, automation, pneumatic, hydraulic and electronic systems, the logic of their operation and different appliances based on these systems. The future graduate of this speciality – a mechatronic – can also be called a technical specialist of a manufacturing enterprise. The demand for such specialists can also be seen from the surplus of possible places for apprenticeship compared to the number of learners: offers have come from different areas like the enterprises producing metal, timber, food and building materials, as well as from the energy and security system companies.
The total number of students in both specialities is about 120. In addition to basic training, the chair also provides professional pre-training on metal processing to gymnasium students. The studies take place predominantly in the study building that was completed in 1999/2000 and holds the classes of speciality subjects, computer class, metal processing speciality workshop for practice, and testing laboratory for materials.
The main cooperation partners of the chair are the manufacturing enterprises of the corresponding economic sphere, companies selling appliances and materials, professional associations, and other educational institutions.
